The Physician Assistant (PA) and/or Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide health care services to patients in the Emergency Department (ED) and/or Urgent Care (UC) with guidance/supervision as needed from physician on duty. PAs and NPs are academically and clinically trained to provide direct patient care and are accountable for their own actions. They are supervised by the physician who is on duty as the hospitalist and are responsible for consulting the hospitalist physician as needed to ensure safe patient care.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Examines patient, takes medical history, records results, and makes diagnosis.
  • Administers and orders diagnostic tests such as x-rays, electrocardiograms, and blood work; interprets test results.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures in accordance with the medical staff privileges granted to them and approved by the organizational standards and licensure.
  • Exercises professional judgment regarding consultation with supervising physicians concerning appropriate treatment.
  • Develops and implements patient care plans, instructs, and counsels patients, and records progress.
  • Prescribes medications to the extent allowable by state guidelines and organizational regulations.
  • the PA and/or NP maintains certifications necessary to provide care in the emergency and urgent care settings, as defined by medical staff credentialling.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated competency dealing with all age groups including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • State accreditation based on certifying exam.
  • Completes required continuing education and maintains licensure to practice.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, and moving.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds at times.
  • Frequent exposure to chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and patient body fluids.
