Job Summary:
There are four basic categories of RN duties—clerical, administrative, clinical, and specialist.
Depending upon the medical practice, the same RN may do one of these categories, or all four
of them.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Taking patient vital signs; recording in the patient’s medical record
- Taking medical histories; recording in the patient's medical record
- Preparing patients for medical tests and examinations
- Assisting practitioners during examinations
- Explaining medical procedures to patients
- Sterilizing medical instruments
- Removing sutures
- Administering topical, oral, or intramuscular medications
- Drawing blood (phlebotomy)
- Wound Care
Administrative RN Summary
Administrative RN duties are less directly involved with patients, and more involved with the general running of the medical practice. Administrative RNs work with patients in the context of scheduling appointments and handling billing functions.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Maintaining the confidentiality of patient information
- Managing inventory and ordering supplies
- Scheduling patient medical procedures
- Following up on patient visits
- Updating patient records
- Obtaining pre-authorizations/precertifications
- Checking the patient portal and responding to patients
- Ordering lab tests and imaging studies
- Scheduling patient appointments
- Supervising LPNs, MAs, and clerical staff
Clerical RN Summary
Clerical RNs perform many of the same duties as administrative RNs, but with less emphasis on medical records and patient information. Clerical RN duties focus more on the business aspects of running a medical practice. They are similar to administrative assistants in typical office settings, managing the day-to-day office activities that keep an office running smoothly.

Specialist RN Summary
The job duties of a specialist RN are somewhat different from those of general RNs. These RNs work in a specialist clinic, such as any of the following practices: Orthopedics, Surgery, Hematology/Oncology, Gastroenterology, or Cardiology.
Specialist RN: Telephone Triage Nurse/Scheduler in Gastroenterology Summary
A Telephone Triage Nurse conducts initial assessments to evaluate how urgently a patient needs care, Answer nursing questions, fill prescriptions, schedule procedures, reviewing patients’ medical history, giving test results. Communicating with physicians, nurses and other members of the care team about patients’ statuses. Updating patient Health information systems with notes. In addition, they assess and manage risk factors and complications as part of their role in a clinic setting. With an ability to effectively manage a fast-paced and often high-pressured environment, triage RNs are an integral part of the healthcare team.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assess patient conditions via phone
- Determine the urgency and type of care required
- Coordinate with healthcare providers to prioritize patient care
- Record and maintain accurate patient information and assessment findings
- Respond to patient inquires and concerns promptly
- Facilitate referrals to appropriate healthcare facilities or specialist
- Scheduling Referrals
- Scheduling procedures
- Educate patients on health management and follow-up care
- Collaborate with healthcare team members to deliver optimal patient care
- Monitor and follow-up on patient progress as needed
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives
- Potential coverage in other Bloomington Departments
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma/GED required
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) or Current Registered Nurse (RN) License
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
- Strong communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to multitask effectively
- 5-10 years of experience as a Triage nurse
- Experience with EMR (Electronic Medical records system) preferred
