Performs physical exams, collects and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications. Formulates and implements prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and inter-conceptional care as defined by midwifery scope of practice. Orientation includes a combination of classroom and precepted bedside clinical experience. Often these patients present with multi-system failure requiring swan ganz monitoring, ventilator support, parenteral nutrition and fluid and electrolyte corrections. In addition, SICU receives adult liver transplants and is a major referral center for adult ECMO/Respiratory failure patients. This ICU also may receive overflow from the Trauma, Neuro, Medicine and Cardiac Intensive Care Units. This includes caring for patients in the Trauma Burn, Neuro-Surgical, Cardiovascular Surgery, Surgical, Medical, and Cardiac Intensive care unit, and Intermediate care units. This will include caring for patients with multiple types of illnesses and disease processes that require both physiologic monitoring and intensive nursing care. These patients often require ventilation support, hemodynamic monitoring, intracranial pressure monitoring, and fluid and electrolyte corrections, parenteral or enteral nutrition and use of multiple cardiac agents and vaso-pressive drips.
