What you will do in this role: The role of the CVOR Surgical Technician is to assist the OR team in the care of patients, equipment and supplies. The CVOR Surgical Technician in Surgery provides care for adolescent patients between 12 to 17 years of age; adult patients between 18 to 64 years; and geriatric patients 65 years and older . The surgical technologist in the first scrub role handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure . The CVOR Surgical Technician understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon . The CVOR Surgical Technician has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field . When the CVOR Surgical Technician is in the second scrub role they assist the surgeon and/or surgical assistant during the operative procedure by carrying out tasks including sponging, suctioning, cutting suture, holding retractors and manipulating the endoscopic camera . What q ualifications y ou w ill n eed: Associates Degree or Vocational School Graduate or equivalent relevant work experience in lieu of degree Certified Surgical Technician (CST) required ; Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification required ; Technician in Surgery (NCCT) preferred; Certified Operating Room Technician preferred. Collaborates with unit manager to counsel/coach new employees during orientation to assist the orientee’s progress towards gaining competency in unit standards/skills. Supports the preceptor role by: Collaborating with CN, department leaders and preceptor to select appropriate assignments and learning experiences for new staff. Fostering the use of adult learning strategies and critical thinking with preceptors by providing ideas, skill stations, different teaching styles, and related activities to help the preceptor be a more effective teacher. Participating in the development, presentation, and evaluation of the preceptor program, in collaboration with other area educators and CNS’s. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of staff education processes through the development, implementation, and evaluation of education materials/systems. Collaborates with appropriate resources (i.e. leadership team, CNSs, other educators, content experts, organization development) to analyze needs and develop, implement, evaluate and maintain education programs (i.e. orientation skills checklists, self-studies, education videos, education supplies, and orientation manual) based on annual needs assessment, staff request, unit direction, new equipment/care practices, variance trends, and patient/parent and other customers’ satisfaction. Educational activities reflect identified needs of the target audience and/or organizational priorities related to clinical practice. Designs each educational activity to include documentation of a needs assessment, description of target audience, educational objectives, content outline, teaching methods (Cornerstone, self-study, presentation, real-time, simulation), evaluation strategies, and designation of appropriate resources (i.e. room arrangements, AV equipment, handouts, other teaching aids). Summary GENERAL SUMMARY The Surgical Technician is responsible for assisting the RN and surgeon during operative procedures. The Surgical Technician assists with cases of various degrees of complexity. This role may require the ability to work flexible shifts and be on call to help fulfill 24/7 operations. Reports to the Operating Room Manager. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Arranges and inventories sterile set up utilizing knowledge of asepsis and sterilization techniques. Assists in preparing and moving of patients, cleaning and room set up. Provides a safe and efficient environment for the surgical patient under the direction of the registered nurse within a defined scope of practice. Performs other duties as assigned. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Certification in operating room technology or surgical technology through the National Association of Operating Room Technicians required. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology, operating room technology or a school of practical nursing or equivalent program required. Basic knowledge to perform arithmetic calculations when maintaining record of charges normally acquired through completion of high school. Approximately three to six months of related experience, preferred, in order to learn sterile techniques, become familiar with anesthesia equipment and cleaning procedures, and learn inventory techniques. BLS-HCP Certification required and/or must be obtained within 90 days of hire. WORKING CONDITIONS Surgical areas work environment with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors from disinfectant solutions/chemicals.
