Chester County Hospital - Nursing Extern Program Start Date: Monday June 22, 2025 Summer Requirements: June, July and August – 36 hours a week (3/12 hour shifts) Fall and Spring Semester – 2/12 hour shifts a month (Saturday and/or Sundays) The Nurse Extern-to-RN Program is a training and mentoring program designed for students currently enrolled in an eligible BSN program who wish to pursue a nursing career at Chester County Hospital (CCH) after becoming licensed to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The program offers advancement of clinical knowledge and skill by working directly with a CCH registered nurse. The extern will gain a greater level of self-confidence, communication, critical thinking skills, time-management skills and clinical competence through reinforcing the fundamentals of nursing education, theoretical knowledge, awareness of the role of the professional nurse and the understanding of organizational structure and operations within an acute care setting. Externships last approximately one year and begin in June each year. Externs are paid an hourly rate and required to work full-time (35+ hours per week) during the summer and two 8 or 12 hour shifts per month during the school year. Externs may also work supplemental hours as a nursing assistant, tech, or behavioral safety assistant when these hours are available. Externs who successfully complete the program, obtain their BSN, pass the NCLEX and become licensed in the Commonwealth of PA are guaranteed an RN position at CCH. There is no guarantee of desired shift, specialty or weekly scheduled hours (FTE). Externs who decrease their regularly scheduled hours or resign from employment voluntarily are required to reimburse some or all of the program cost. Requirements: · Enrolled in good standing in an accredited Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) program; and currently in the last year of study. Completion of courses in med-surge nursing; and has completed at least two clinical rotations in a hospital setting. Current CPR certification is required After Completion of program · Employment as a CCH registered nurse is assured to the successful nurse extern after completing the Extern Program, obtaining their BSN degree and taking and passing the NCLEX and holding licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Pennsylvania. · At the onset of the Nurse Extern-to-RN Program, the Extern agrees to continue employment in the position of RN at CCH for a period of 18-months.
