Job Description: Seeking a talented RN to join our team in the Surgery Department. The Surgery Nurse works under general supervision while assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the nursing care required to meet the needs of the patient. Job duties include (but not limited to): Performs complete patient assessments and communicates to the providers. Documents and maintains accurate nursing records. Functions as patient advocate between patient, physicians, other healthcare providers, administration, etc., as needed, and interacts professionally with patients and family members. Initiates diagnostic, preventative and rehabilitative nursing procedures as appropriate to the patient's care and safety. Administers medications to patients in accordance with approved standards of nursing knowledge and competency, based on age of patient, patient's clinical condition and physician orders. Other duties as assigned. DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES: Verification of patient’s identity, operative procedure, operative site, surgeon and consent. Follows standard procedures and aseptic principles of practice for surgical interventions, along with preferences of surgeons and anesthesiologists, when planning for intraoperative care. Anticipate needs of surgeons and/or specific procedures. Performs sponge, instrument and needle counts according to policy and procedure. Applies principles of proper body alignment during transfer and positioning of patient. Ensures safety of patient during the use of electrical equipment (i.e. electrosurgical cautery units). Correctly collects and accurately labels specimens. Documents and maintains accurate OR nursing records including: intraoperative care, patient’s condition, medications, treatment, responses and assessment of changes, etc. Identifies, labels, and dispenses medications and solutions safely. Assists anesthesia as requested by anesthesia personnel. Demonstrates ability to assist in ACLS interventions. Maintains surgeons’ preference books Become proficient in scrubbing and circulating duties for all specialties. Fill in other duties as needed to meet OR staffing such as housekeeping and workroom duties. Cover call shifts as assigned with a 15 minute response time. Assist in the orientation of new staff/students Assist in the maintenance of a clean, dust-free environment. Coordinate or assist in the coordination of specialty supplies. Functions as a patient advocate between patient, physician, other healthcare providers, administration, etc., as needed, and interacts professionally with patient and family members. Position Requirements: EDUCATION: Associate Degree in Nursing required (Bachelor's preferred). EXPERIENCE: 1 year in surgical nursing experience preferred.
